At Subset, we know the language of sustainability can feel overwhelming. What does carbon neutral really mean? How is Fair Trade verified? And what exactly is a carbon footprint?
We’re here to make it simple.
This Sustainability Glossary breaks down key terms you’ll see in sustainable fashion, climate conversations, and eco-friendly shopping. Whether you’re learning for yourself or explaining it to a friend, consider this your go-to reference guide.
Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CO2e)
Not all greenhouse gases are created equal. The six greenhouse gases defined by the Kyoto Protocol—like methane and nitrous oxide—each have different warming impacts on the planet. To simplify reporting, emissions are converted into a single unit: carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). This makes it easier to understand the total climate impact of an activity or product.
Carbon Emissions
Carbon emissions refer to the release of greenhouse gases—including carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat, raising Earth’s average temperature and fueling climate change. Reducing emissions is central to slowing global warming.
Carbon Footprint
Your carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions (measured in CO2e) created by your daily activities, products, or an organization’s operations. For Subset, that includes emissions from manufacturing, shipping, fulfillment, and even third-party suppliers. Measuring this footprint is the first step to reducing it.
Carbon Neutral
When a company or product is carbon neutral, it means its total carbon footprint has been reduced and offset—bringing net emissions to zero. This is often achieved by cutting emissions where possible and investing in projects that absorb or prevent the equivalent amount of CO2 released.
Carbon Offsets
Carbon offsets are investments in environmental projects that balance out greenhouse gas emissions. Examples include reforestation, renewable energy installations, forest conservation, or capturing methane from landfills. By funding these initiatives, companies and individuals can compensate for emissions that can’t yet be eliminated.
Fair Trade
The Fair Trade Standard protects workers’ rights across the supply chain. It ensures fair wages, safe working conditions, reasonable hours, and the absence of forced or child labor. Factories and farms can earn Fair Trade certification, giving shoppers confidence that their purchase supports ethical labor practices.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the gold standard in sustainable fashion certifications. GOTS ensures that textiles are genuinely organic and produced under strict social and environmental criteria—from fiber sourcing through manufacturing. Subset’s organic cotton underwear is proudly GOTS certified, meaning it’s safer for your skin and kinder to the planet.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) measures the environmental impact of a product or process at every stage—from raw material extraction (“cradle”) to disposal (“grave”). LCAs look at water use, carbon emissions, energy consumption, and more. In sustainable fashion, LCAs highlight the hidden impact of clothing production and help brands make better choices.
